Then, envision yourself working with a client or couple who presents with that diagnosis. It can be a client you have worked with (please change information to protect confidentiality) or a hypothetical client. Throughout this course, you will provide a case analysis of this client or couple in your assignments.
Some potential hypothetical examples you could choose to build on could include:
- Client 1: Adolescent of Syrian descent, female, living in rural Pennsylvania, presenting with depression.
- Client 2: Latino male; age 75; living in Dallas, Texas; presenting with dementia.
- Client 3: A single, nonbinary 25-year-old presenting with neurodivergence; living in Tampa, Florida
- Client 4: Couple in a blended family with her two children (ages two and four) and his three children (ages 10, 13, and 16) living in suburban Charleston, South Carolina; dealing with substance abuse by the 16-year-old.
- Client 5: Same-sex couple in a relationship for five years, living in Bangor, Maine. One of the partners is presenting with PTSD related to previous trauma.
Consider that you are providing an intake meeting for your staff about this client. In this meeting, you will need to provide an overview of the client and discuss the ethical, social justice, and diversity considerations to be applied while engaging with the client system.
Instructions
You will submit an APA formatted Word document identifying evidence-based practices to engage client systems using the following headings:
- Introduction:
- Provide a brief introduction of your client. (If you are using a client you are familiar with, please use an alias to protect confidentiality.) This is not an assessment but information you would typically provide on an intake form. This should include, at a minimum, first name, age, geographic location, race, gender, marital status, and any other relevant demographic information, as well as presenting the diagnosis or problem.
- Ethical Considerations:
- Include an analysis of at least one ethical consideration or challenge that might arise when engaging with this client and a recommendation on how to address that challenge. Some examples could include but are not limited to informed consent, self-determination, confidentiality, access to services, dignity and worth of person, diagnosis, et cetera. Be sure to provide citations and references to justify why this would be a potential ethical challenge and your recommendation on how to address it.
- Social, Economic, or Environmental Justice:
- Use peer-reviewed literature to examine a potential social, economic, or environmental justice challenge your client may face based on the demographic factors presented. Discuss the potential justice consideration and provide at least one recommendation to reduce the issue’s impact while engaging with this client system. Use peer-reviewed literature to justify your recommendation.
- Diversity Considerations:
- Choose one demographic variable for the client (that is, age, race, gender, sexual orientation, et cetera) then analyze evidence-based practices on engaging clients through a lens of cultural humility based on the diverse demographic variable. Use peer-reviewed articles to create a recommendation on how to recognize and address this area of diversity in your engagement with the client system.
- Summary:
- Evaluate how the intersectionality of diversity, social justice, and ethics may impact how staff will engage the client system. Provide an overview of the dynamics of intersectionality and at least one evidence-based recommendation on recognizing and addressing the challenges that may occur based on these factors. Justify this recommendation using peer-reviewed literature.
