Note Taking Tips

Note taking is an important skill that can save you time when preparing for an exam or assignment. It is necessary to evaluate all videos, lecture notes, texts or articles you are reading and to make reasonable choices about what is the most important information to capture.

Effective note taking allows you to:

  1. Understand the information:
    • Taking notes is a good way to develop your knowledge and comprehension of a subject; it is not just a mechanical process of recording data. Reading a source, making decisions about what is useful for your records, and writing the notes will encourage you to think more deeply about what you are reading as well as how it relates to other subjects you are studying.
    • Use the Metacognitive Logs if you would like structure while taking notes.
  2. Summarize the key points:
    • Do you notes answer: What are the major take away points for each journal category?
    • Figures and annotated diagrams can explain processes better than words
      • Do you like to make sketches or draw out your own figures? No problem. Take a picture or screenshot and include it in your journal entry.
    • Include screenshots of figures BUT write the figure captions and explain the significance
