1. Select an article

Choose one article from the pre-selected articles below. Each article is from an established, well-regarded publication in the form of a journalistic investigative piece (not an opinion article or a report of a specific scientific study). These are accessible through UW Libraries (you must access on campus) and as pdfs in the linked google drive readings folder.

2. Draft your essay

Write a 2-3 page critical analysis (single-spaced, Times New Roman 12pt, 1-inch margins). Upload in docx format. Your analysis should be in the form of a narratively cohesive essay, not a list of answers to prompts. It must include all of the following elements:

  • Introduction
  • Evolutionary/Biocultural Analysis
  • Fact check
  • Discussion of Bias
  • Conclusion

Formatting

  • 2 pages, single-spaced, Times New Roman 12pt, 1-inch margins (max 3 pages)
  • APA in-text citations: (Author, Year). Include bibliography at end of document
  • Your media article must appear in the bibliography (full citation, not URL only)
  • Only use direct quotes as indicated above (when citing specific text passages as examples of bias or as claims to fact-check). Otherwise you should always paraphrase and cite facts and arguments derived from original sources.
  • All submissions screened for plagiarism
  • Refer to the Media Analysis Research Guide for additional formatting instructions and AI usage policy
