For this project, you will be producing two things: an AI-involved analysis of two closely related entry-level job ads, and a cover letter that applies the best practices based on what you’ve analyzed. It will be aimed toward one of the two ads you have chosen.
This project helps you practice analyzing job listings, identifying key action verbs, and writing a professional cover letter targeted to a specific position.
Reminder: You will complete a in before submitting the final version of this project. Your draft will be reviewed by a classmate, and their feedback will help you revise your analysis and cover letter.
Instructions
Step 1: Choose and Analyze Job Ads
For this project, you should choose two job ads for closely related jobs. For instance:
- One might be a pharmaceutical sales rep job at Lilly that sells oncology drugs.
- Another might be a medical device sales job for a local company in Phoenix.
- Or, one might be a pharmaceutical sales rep job that interfaces only with insurance companies and pharmacy benefits managers.
You will include the full text of both ads, clearly labeled. (Links go bad, so copy and paste the entirety of the text of the job ads.)
Then, you’ll produce a 600-word analysis that compares and contrasts the ads and identifies which is the best choice for you personally to apply to and why.
AI Use: This analysis can use generative AI to help you identify relevant points of comparison and contrast, and the action verbs in the ads. The end product of the analysis should be your own distinct writing. (Use AI to generate ideas; write it yourself.)
Step 2: Write Your Cover Letter
Then, you’ll produce a cover letter for the best-fit job. It will use your analysis as a guide for what to say. Again, the generation of the writing in this will be your own. (ChatGPT writes poor cover letterswell talk about why.)
Youll make sure to include as many of the action verbs from your job ad as possible in the cover letter. Also make sure to use block format for the letter and include all parts of a standard business letter.
Requirements
- Length: 600-word analysis plus one cover letter, combined in a single document.
- Format: 12 pt Times New Roman, 1-inch margins. Use single spacing for the cover letter.
- File Type: Submit one file in .doc, .docx, or .pdf format.
