Put a page break at the end of each page. If you don’t, when you upload the document all of the pages will run together and there will be a deduction for that. For example, without a page break at the end of your outline, when you upload your document, part of the first page of your essay will shift and end up at the end of your outline. To insert a page break using google docs, simply click insert up at the top of your screen. Scroll down. In the dropbox, you’ll see break. Click it. Then click page break. The cursor will automatically drop down to the top of the next page.
ONLY the Outline can be single spaced.
The Research Essay MUST be double spaced (If your essay is single spaced I will fail the assignment). It MUST be typed in 12pt. Times New Roman font. If any part of your essay is typed in any other font, I will fail the assignment.
You must include at least ONE direct quote in each body paragraph. You may include up to two quotes per body paragraph. The first time you mention your source, be sure to introduce the author in the signal phrase. The following example is from your in-line parenthetical citation guide which is in Weeks 1 and 2 of our Brightspace shell.
EX: According to Tom Fielding, author of Why We Cant Help Acting Like Monkeys, human behavior is fairly predictable– and usually destructive (65).
After that, use only the authors last name, either in your text or with the page number in the parenthetical citation.
*Remember that online sources do not have page numbers
No direct quotes in your intro paragraph.
You may only paraphrase if you are citing statistics (such as dates and statistical data), or when re-telling a story. For example, let’s say one of your sources is a video (short clip)/documentary. While it may make sense to select evidence that should be directly quoted, there are times when it would make sense to use the method of narration to tell what is happening in a given scene. *Don’t forget to use time stamps in your parenthetical references!
The Works Cited page MUST be double spaced and include 6 or more sources. One of those sources must be a scholarly journal article. If you’re not sure what a scholarly journal article looks like, refer to the module and select the tab that says “Characteristics of a Scholarly Journal article”. Your article doesn’t have to come from the WCC databases. You can also use Google Scholar. Of course you don’t have to cite all six sources in the first two pages of your research essay.
