Topic: Improving Cancer Screening Participation Among CALD Communities in Australia: Challenges, Policy Evaluation, and the Role of Nurses and Midwives
Background:
Cancer screening is one of the most effective ways for detecting the early stages of many cancers and the Australian government provides free cancer screening programs for eligible Australians.
Participation rates in preventative health services such as cancer screening programs for culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) communities are lower than the Australian-born population and in recent studies, disparities in cancer outcomes have been reported. This suggests revised measures are required to improve the participation of people from a CALD background in preventative health activities such as cancer screening.
You need to complete three small parts for this assessment using the AT2 template.
Part 1: Discuss challenges (approx. 1000-1100 words)
Task:
Identify and discuss two (2) reasons/challenges why people from a CALD population in Australia have lower participation rates with preventative health services with a focus on cancer screening programs.
Requirement:
Tips:
Use scholarly sources. Relevant websites (i.e. government and organisational websites) can be used as references.
Discuss critically, do not just provide a description.
Consider points discussed in Moodle such as communication barriers, cultural beliefs and perceptions, socioeconomic factors, system issues, or knowledge gap.
Part 2: Evaluation of current policy or guideline (approx. 1200-1250 words)
Task:
Evaluate one (1) current cancer screening government-level policy or guideline OR one (1) current cancer screening organisational-level policy or guideline. Critically analyse strengths and weaknesses of building and integrating cultural competency into health services for your chosen policy/guideline.
Requirements:
Place in-text citations as required – a number of references is not set.
Relevant websites (i.e. government and organisational websites) can be used as references.
Critically evaluate strengths (i.e. inclusivity, cultural consideration, staff training) and limitations (gaps in implementation, accessibility).
Tips: You might like to think about:
Are the strategies or approaches suggested good in principle but difficult to implement in practice?
Are suitable supports in place to make the policy/guideline workable in a real-world setting?
Are there ways in which the policy/guideline could be strengthened?
Part 3: Role of nurses and midwives (approx. 800-900 words)
Task:
Discuss the key skills, knowledge and attitudes required by nurses and midwives to provide effective and culturally appropriate care for people from CALD backgrounds who are experiencing challenges in accessing/participating in preventative health services with a focus on cancer screening programs. Suggest what staff education and training are required to effectively use the policy/guideline discussed in the previous section and/or resources for future improvements.
Requirements:
- Place in-text citations as required – a number of references is not set.
- Relevant websites (i.e. government and organisational websites) can be used as references.
- Identify essential competencies (i.e. cultural safety, communication skills, advocacy)
- Explain strategies nurses can use to provide culturally appropriate care (i.e. work with interpreters, community engagement, health education).
Tips:
It is suggested to reference professional standards and guideline for your discussion (i.e. Cultural competence frameworks, Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia standards)
