1. Objective
This final paper (MINIMUM of 10 pages content) is the capstone project of the course, designed to demonstrate your ability to conduct independent historical research and construct a nuanced, evidence-based argument. Your task is to move beyond the textbook and engage in a deep, critical analysis of a specific theme or subject from Mexican-American history as covered in Chapters 5, 6, 7, or 8 of Mexicanos: A History of Mexicans in the United States.
The goal is not to summarize a chapter, but to advance an original thesisa central argument that you will support through rigorous research and critical interpretation.
2. Paper Requirements
A. Analytical Focus:
- Your paper must present a clear thesis statement in the introduction.
- The body of the paper should be dedicated to defending this thesis with well-organized evidence and your own critical analysis.
- Engage with the “why” and “how” of your topic, exploring causes, consequences, significance, and differing interpretations.
B. Research & Sources:
- Foundation: Your analysis must be grounded in the context provided by Mexicanos, but must significantly expand upon it.
- Source Requirements: You are required to use a minimum of 5-8 scholarly sources beyond the textbook.
- These must include a mix of academic books and peer-reviewed journal articles, sourced from the college library or its digital databases.
- Web-based sources (if used) must be from reputable academic, governmental, or institutional archives [e.g., JSTOR (Journal Storage), Project MUSE (academic journals), university press websites, the National Archives]. Wikipedia and similar encyclopedias are not considered academic sources.
- Evidence: Use specific examples, data, and quotations from your sources to support your claims.
C. Structure and Formatting:
- Length: The paper must contain a minimum of 10 full pages of analytical text.
