Due Dates and Format:
Typed rough draft due: Tuesday, February 24th
Final copy due: Thursday, February 26th
Length: Cover Letter- 1 page (single-spaced)
Specifications: Typed, 1 inch margins, 11-12 pt. Times New Roman.
Format: Paper should be formatted as a letter, not an academic paper. It should be in block
format, which means all text is left justified, single-spaced, with double space between
paragraphs. (This is the most common format for business letters.) Follow the format of the
examples we reviewed in class.
Your Task:
1. Write a cover letter to (hypothetically) accompany a resume for a job application applying for
a job in your desired field. Again, use the format from the examples we discuss in class. The
letter should be directed to a specific employer with a listing on the Internet. You will need to
place yourself in a different situation for these jobs: On the verge of graduation from
college, rather than at the beginning of your college career. Think about what an employer
would look for when searching for potential candidates. Even if you do not have many
qualifications right now, you can just pretend (for this assignment) that you do. This
will require research into your desired profession and major. Perhaps this will help you
determine what activities you should become involved in at Gannon or the university you
decide to attend.
Thinking about your audience is very important for this assignment. The person to whom you
are writing may be your future employer, so how do you want to sound to them? Do not feel you
need to use big or impressive words. They want to know you, not your computers thesaurus. A
cover letter is your time to shine, so sell yourself.
Evaluation of your Letter:
I will be looking especially for:
Well-developed content, tightly focused, with clear, logical reasoning and evidence.
Content that is thoughtful and significant to readers other than yourself.
Your development of an appropriate persona for your purpose and audience.
The unity and coherence of your letter.
Your use of Standard English conventions.
Your use of word processing, grammar and spell checking technologies.
Evidence that you have used a thoughtful writing process to create your paper.
Would I hire you?
this is the job application.
