Traditional mainstream media act as so-called gatekeepers that vet the news and decide what kind of content gets published. However, social media networks have changed the game. What are the benefits and dangers of this unprecedented access and speed of distribution?

One benefit is that people are prepared for natural disasters. If theres a hurricane coming in your area, you can know days ahead of time so you can prepare your house and family for when it comes. You can even get constant updates to the hurricane seeing what areas were affected and what areas are closed off. One of the dangers is the spread of misinformation. If one website publishes something alarming, more websites and accounts will post the same thing within seconds of each other. It isnt until much later that the story is fact checked in proving false. At that point it doesnt even matter because everyone has seen the story and believed it.

Also, people can make fake accounts to impersonate others. There is also lots of people who try to get personal information out of others without them knowing.
