Your essay should address the following:
- At least 5 paragraphs total, one paragraph (5-8 sentences) for each response (make sure your paragraphs start with a half inch indentation).
- Make sure your body paragraphs follow the order of your thesis statement. Use only the third person point of view for this essay.
- Avoid referring to your own essay or your writing process.
Introductory paragraph:
- Include background information about the topic/issue.
- Introduce the author and essay you will discuss.
- Write a brief objective summary (2-3 sentences) of the essay you selected.
- End your introductory paragraph with your thesis statement from the Week 1 proposal worksheet.
Body paragraph detailing the first rhetorical mode:
- Start with a topic sentence introducing first rhetorical mode from thesis statement.
- Define the rhetorical mode.
- Essay evidence (quote) that illustrates rhetorical mode being used (use a signal phrase and an APA in-text citation).
- Explain how/why essay evidence illustrates the first rhetorical mode and how it supports the essay’s theme.
- Evaluate the author’s effectiveness of using this strategy (does it help the reader understand the topic? Why or why not?)
- Transition sentence to next paragraph.
Body paragraph detailing the second rhetorical mode:
- Start with a topic sentence introducing second rhetorical mode from thesis statement.
- Define the rhetorical mode.
- Provide evidence (quote) from the essay that illustrates rhetorical mode being used (use a signal phrase and an APA in-text citation).
- Explain how/why the essay evidence illustrates the second rhetorical mode and how it supports the essay’s theme.
- Evaluate the author’s effectiveness of using this strategy (does it help the reader understand the topic? Why or why not?)
- Transition sentence to next paragraph.
Body paragraph detailing a response to the essay with a supporting, peer-reviewed library source:
- Start with a topic sentence introducing your reaction to the author’s argument (in 3rd person).
- Explain your logic for this argumentative stance.
- Introduce the author and title of the article (properly cited).
- Support your response with a direct quote/paraphrase from the peer-reviewed, scholarly source (properly cited).
- Explain how/why the essay evidence illustrates the claim made in your topic sentence.
- Transition sentence to next paragraph.
Concluding paragraph:
- Restate your thesis using different wording.
- Write 2-3 sentences that summarize your analysis of how the rhetorical modes help communicate the author’s theme.
- Summarize who the audience is for this essay and why it would appeal to that audience.
- Share final thoughts about your analysis of the essay.
REQUIREMENTS
- Writing must be an original submission written by the student
- 1000 words (minimum)
- Cite your TWO sources (selected essay and research article) with direct quotes and correct in-text citations
- Attach a Microsoft Word document formatted to APA standards, including title page and a reference page
Please note the following:
- All papers must be Microsoft Word documents.
- The paper is double-spaced in Times New Roman, size 12, and has no extra line space between the paragraphs.
- The paper uses one-inch margins and half-inch indentions for the beginning of paragraphs. You can set this up in Microsoft Word to automatically default to these settings for your paper.
- Your paper should include a title page, body text, and a references page.
