Read the attached article, ‘Using Machine Learning to Improve Patient Care’ by Rachel Gordon. Then review the following mini-case study scenario and answer the critical thinking questions.
Deliverables to be uploaded into the drop box
- A PowerPoint presentation with an embedded video of you presenting your information or a voice-over
- PDF of the peer-reviewed article you found to support your operational solution
Mini-Case Study Scenario:
You are the Data and Quality Improvement Coordinator for a regional health system implementing machine learning (ML) to improve patient care and reduce preventable adverse events in the ICU. Leadership is interested in exploring how ML tools, like ICU Intervene or EHR Model Transfer, could be integrated into your ICU operations to improve predictive care and workflow efficiency. You have been asked to draft a brief action plan describing how your hospital could implement machine learning for actionable interventions and improve patient outcomes while ensuring patient safety and compliance with health information standards.
Critical Thinking and Solution Identification:
- Using 5-Why root cause analysis, identify at least two root causes of preventable adverse events in the ICU that could be addressed using machine learning tools. Explain why these errors or gaps occur.
- Describe two specific programmatic or operational changes your ICU could implement using machine learning to improve predictive care and patient safety.
- Explain how data/information technology, including machine learning tools, could be used to monitor and report progress on your plan.
- Discuss how your plan would help your facility meet applicable accreditation or licensing standards related to patient safety, data use, and quality improvement.
- Cite at least one relevant point from the assigned article to justify your proposed approach. Cite the point in APA format within the text of your presentation and as part of a reference page/slide at the end of the presentation.
- Find a supporting reference to your suggested operational change. The article must be peer-reviewed and from a source ranked on the JANE journal guide (https://jane.biosemantics.org/faq.php). Cite your supporting point in APA format.
