Artists in early American history very rarely had formal (academic) training, especially during colonial times. The artwork that was produced was often done by enslaved individuals, as well as from family, community, and personal journeys. This type of art is sometimes characterize as , which again is art that is produced by artist who had no formal academic training.

In recent decades, the work of 20th and 21st century American self-taught artists would become part of museums and private collections.

We Are Made of Stories is from The Robson Family Collection of self- taught artist. This exhibition was shown at the in 2023. This collection features artwork from a variety of individuals from across the America , throughout the last 100 years. The art is raw, personal and may have never been meant to be viewed by anyone other than artist.
