Critical Thinking Discussion (Chapter 2)

Chris is beginning his third year as the head teacher in a mixed-age preschool classroom. He recently attended an in-service program that addressed childrens vision development and conditions that interfere with learning. Chris is anxious to put this newly acquired information to use.

For several weeks this fall, he has noticed that 4-year-old Lynette often loses interest during story times. She leaves her place in the circle and crawls closer to him in an apparent effort to look at pictures in the books he reads from and shows to the children. Chris has also noted that Lynette lowers her head close to any puzzles, manipulatives, or art projects that she is working on. When he shared these observations with Lynettes parents, they also expressed concern about her clumsiness and her need to see things up close.

Chris discussed this information with the school nurse who tested Lynettes vision on two different occasions and determined that it was not within normal limits. The nurse arranged a meeting with Lynettes parents to discuss the screening results and encourage them to make an appointment with an eye specialist for further testing. Lynettes father mentioned that he was recently laid off from his job and they no longer had health insurance.

Discuss the teachers role and professional responsibility in identifying children who may have a health condition that affects their ability to learn.
