In your second reflection assignment, you will identify and explore any potential biases, prejudices, stereotypes, and/or assumptions that you may hold about certain groups of people that may have been uncovered over the course. The point of this assignment is not to judge or induce guilt or shame. Rather, it is to become awareness of these beliefs so that we can challenge them, with the goal of increasing our cultural competence and humility. Indeed, we all hold biases, prejudices, stereotypes, and assumptions about groups of people based on our experiences and what we learn from those around us. However, we must first acknowledge them before we can change them.
For this assignment, you will be presented with a series of statements about certain groups of people and be asked to privately write a word or few words that describe a bias, prejudice, stereotype, or assumption you have or you have heard about the group. This is to be completed privately and not submitted as part of this reflection.
After you have completed the worksheet, please reflect on the process of identifying any biases, prejudices, stereotypes, and/or assumptions you hold or have heard about specific groups of people, including what you have learned about yourself, what it feels like to admit these beliefs, the accuracy of these beliefs, and what you may do to challenge them when appropriate. Integrate what you learned from the video in the Unit 6 Learning Resources titled .
