Understanding Your Identity

One of the oldest philosophical maxims, inscribed on the Temple of Apollo at Delphi, Greece, is Know thyself. How we interact with others, every aspect of our communication, is affected in some way by how we see ourselves.

For this assignment, you are going to look at your own self-concept, how you see yourself. Download the form below and fill out the appropriate fields. Because you may feel uncomfortable with sharing some information, you may leave one (1) row of the form blank.

The left column of the form lists eight different types of identity. In the middle column, list what you see as your identity for that category, being as specific as you are comfortable being.

In the third column, discuss what this identity means to you. How does it affect your outlook and how you address other people? How significant is this regarding your communication with others? How much do you make others aware of this aspect of your self-concept?
