Prior to beginning this discussion, select a microbe covered in Chapter 12 in our textbook. This chapter is assigned reading later in our class. This weeks discussion is a little bit different from our other course discussions in several ways. This discussion replaces our lab this week. Additionally, the scoring for this discussion is a bit different. The initial post with the PowerPoint (PPT) is valued at 60 points and the one required response is valued at 20 points. The point value for the initial post is higher than our usual due to the amount of work required to complete the PowerPoint. Please review the discussion rubric prior to posting. This week, you will create a PowerPoint on one of the topics shown in the dropdown box below. The presentation is from the perspective of a healthcare professional or community health expert. Your final product is one that could be used to educate the general population on the topic. Further down on this page, there are additional details to assist you in completing a PowerPoint presentation if you are not familiar with these. These resources include links to Getting Started with PowerPoint, which are directions to create an engaging presentation How-To videos. Please view each of these prior to beginning working on your presentation. Finally, there are directions to save and submit your work so it is easier for others to view within the discussion forum. Using your own words (no copy/paste allowed), include the following in your presentation: Title slide with the topic chosen (your title), your name, instructor’s name, and submission date. Describe the microbe. Explain how the microbe is transmitted to humans. Summarize who is most likely to be infected by the microbe and the circumstances under which they may be infected. Discuss how people can avoid being infected by the microbe. Explain the signs and symptoms for the infection. Examine any long-term effects that may occur from the infection. References slide. Meaning of each of the descriptive words above: Describe = convey information. Explain = use and apply knowledge. Summarize = convey information. Discuss = grasp the meaning of the information and be able to share that with others in a meaningful, in-depth manner. Examine = breakdown information into parts and explain the relationship between the parts.
