Ultrasound Case Study

Final Project: Ultrasound Case Study Project Overview The purpose of this final project is to allow students to demonstrate clinical knowledge, critical thinking, and ultrasound image interpretation skills through the development of a comprehensive case study. Students will select and analyze a real or researched ultrasound case and present their findings in a structured format. This project is designed to strengthen your ability to correlate patient history, scanning technique, sonographic findings, and clinical outcomes. Project Objectives By completing this project, students will be able to: Apply clinical reasoning to ultrasound examinations Demonstrate understanding of pathology and sonographic appearance Correlate patient presentation with imaging findings Identify proper scanning protocols and technique Interpret and analyze ultrasound images Communicate medical imaging information professionally Option 2: Researched Case A case obtained from reputable medical or educational sources Sources must be cited properly Images must be from credible, professional resources Required Components of the Case Study Title Slide / Introduction Include: Case study title Student name Course name Date Type of exam (Abdomen, OB/GYN, Vascular, Echo, etc.) Patient History and Clinical Presentation Include: Patient age and gender (no identifying information) Chief complaint / symptoms Relevant medical history Ordering indication for exam Anatomy and Physiology Review Brief overview of normal anatomy related to the case Function of the organ or system being evaluated Exam Protocol and Technique Describe: Type of ultrasound exam performed Patient preparation (if applicable) Patient positioning Transducer selection Scanning approach and protocol followed Any challenges or limitations encountered Sonographic Findings Include: Detailed description of findings Measurements obtained Appearance of pathology or abnormality Comparison to normal anatomy Diagnostic Images Students must include: Minimum of 35 labeled ultrasound images Images must clearly demonstrate the case topic or pathology Labels should include: Anatomy Pathology (if present) Orientation (if applicable) Measurements when relevant Pathology Discussion Explain: Description of the condition Sonographic characteristics Associated clinical symptoms Risk factors or causes Differential diagnoses (if applicable) Clinical Outcome or Management If available, include: Final diagnosis Additional imaging or testing Treatment or management of the patient (If outcome is unknown, discuss typical management for the condition.) Personal Reflection Students should discuss: What you learned from this case Challenges or interesting aspects of the case How this case improved your understanding of ultrasound or pathology References Minimum of 2 credible academic or medical references Use APA or MLA format Sources must be from textbooks, peer-reviewed journals, or reputable medical websites Written Paper: 35 pages (double spaced) Image and Privacy Requirements All patient identifiers must be removed Images must be used ethically and legally Proper credit must be given for researched images
