Part 3 discussion
Several years after the Civil war, statues of leaders of the Confederacy began to appear in public spaces throughout the U.S. south, with most being erected between 1890-1950 (). In 2015, activist Bree Newsome climbed the flagpole on North Carolinas statehouse grounds and removed the Confederate flag. Two years later, she said, Removing the flag in South Carolina was one thing, but racism exists in South Carolina as policy and social practice (). Today, there is controversy over removing the Confederate flag and tearing down monuments to the Confederacy generals.
- How do the symbols of the Confederacy support or challenge our norms, beliefs, and values? Do you think we should remove the statues and the battle flag? Why or why not? What should we do with them? Finally, will removing the symbols of racism help the struggle against racist policies and practices? If so, how? If not, why not?
