touchstone 5

The maternal mortality rate for Black women in Red Oak County is notably high. Black women experience 47.5 deaths per 100,000 live births, compared to 16.8 for White women. To further complicate things, only 30% of Black women receive any kind of prenatal care, compared to 85% of White women. The local health department has been trying to determine why that inequity exists but does not yet have the budget to conduct a survey or focus groups.

Many women in Red Oak County face a range of health issues before and during pregnancy, including hypertension, diabetes, and complications from preterm births. The prevalence of these conditions is higher in the most economically disadvantaged areas, where access to preventive care and early intervention is limited. For example, the rate of low-birth-weight infants is significantly higher among Black women (14%) compared to White women (7%). A significant number of pregnant women are engaging in behaviors such as smoking, unhealthy eating, and lack of exercise. About 25% of pregnant Black women in the county smoke, as compared to 10% in higher-income areas. Traditional health practices and a general historical mistrust of the health care system contribute to the underutilization of available services, particularly among the Black population.

A recent community health assessment highlighted the urgent need for comprehensive maternal health interventions and addressing social determinants of health such as income, education, and housing. The assessment revealed that many Black women delay or miss prenatal care appointments due to transportation, financial barriers, distrust of the medical community, and language and cultural barriers. Additionally, the high crime rates and unsafe living conditions in certain neighborhoods also limit safe mobility and access to the needed services, creating an environment of chronic stress that further impacts maternal health. The rate of maternal mental health issues such as postpartum depression is three times higher in Red Oaks Black community than in Red Oaks Hispanic community and two times higher in Red Oaks Black community than in neighboring, higher-income White communities.

Step 2: Create Presentation Slides.

Use a presentation tool like PowerPoint or Google Slides to outline and organize your presentation. Feel free to add titles, graphics, or transitions to the slides and slide deck, but note that these are not required or part of your grade. Your presentation must include the following:

Slide Component
Title Slide Your title slide will be the first slide and should include your name, the date, and the population you selected.
Health Promotion Approaches For the CPSTF recommendation that corresponds with improving the health of your selected population, there are two or more health-related behaviors of potential focus. Identify one behavior of focus and explain in the notes section how addressing that behavior could improve the health of the selected population.
PRECEDE-PROCEED ModelPhase 1: Social Assessment Using the data you have been provided with up to this point, assume it serves as your community health needs assessment (CHNA). Identify one possible strength and one possible weakness or challenge of this population in participating in the behavior you selected, and describe each in the notes section.

Note: Phase 2 of the PRECEDE-PROCEED model is skipped in this Touchstone and is not a requirement to include; proceed to Phase 3 for the next slide.

PRECEDE-PROCEED ModelPhase 3: Educational and Ecological Assessment Using the data you have been provided with up to this point, assume it serves as your CHNA. Identify each of the following, and describe them in the notes section of the slide:

  • One predisposing factor that could influence your populations motivation to engage in the health behavior you selected
  • One enabling factor that could facilitate or hinder the adoption of the health behavior you selected
  • One reinforcing factor that could provide continued incentive or reward to maintain the health behavior you selected

Note: Phase 4 of the PRECEDE-PROCEED model is skipped in this Touchstone and is not a requirement to include; proceed to Phase 5.

PRECEDE-PROCEED ModelPhase 5: Program Development and Implementation Using the population and CPSTF recommendation you selected, the behavior you chose to address, and the information from the PRECEDE phases you completed above, state your suggestion for an intervention or program to address this health behavior with your chosen population, and describe each following element in the notes section of the slide.

Ensure the following elements are included in your answer:

  • The overall purpose/goal of the intervention
  • The primary target audience for the intervention
  • Two key strategies for achieving the purpose/goal with the primary target audience
PRECEDE-PROCEED ModelPhases 6, 7, and 8: Process, Outcome, and Impact Evaluation Using the population and information you completed above, do the following:

  • Identify one major short-term outcome that you want your intervention or program to achieve. Describe how the short-term outcome would be evaluated in the notes section of the slide.
  • Identify one major longer-term impact you want your intervention or program to achieve. Describe how the longer-term impact would be evaluated in the notes section of the slide.
Community Ownership and Sustainability Using the population and information you completed above, identify two ways that you could encourage community ownership and sustainability in your program for the future, and describe each in the notes section of the slide.
References (Optional) This slide is only needed if you have used references besides the course tutorials. Ideas for reputable outside sources include government or national organization websites, news articles from reputable websites, or research articles. Any references used should follow APA formatting and be listed in alphabetical order.

Step 3: Add Speaker Notes.

Recall that in this assignment, you are a fictional paid consultant for a collaborative community-based public health team at the fictional University of Red Oak College of Public Health, Department of Community Health. For this assignment, you are not giving the presentation but preparing a slide deck summarizing your findings and recommendations.

An important step in preparing a presentation is writing speaker notes. Speaker notes are notes added to a slide presentation as a reference for the presenter and can be found below each slide. If you were giving an oral presentation, these notes wouldnt be visible to your audience when youre in Presenter View. But you would be able to see them, and they would guide you through your presentation.

Your speaker notes will be used to evaluate your project, so make sure you write in complete sentences and pay attention to spelling and grammar. If you use any external sources, make sure that the source information is cited using in-text citations in APA style. These citations should include the authors last name and the year of publication for the source, like this: (Mitchell, 2014).

Step 4: Submit the Presentation.

Once you have completed your slides and corresponding speaker notes, it is time to submit your presentation. If you are using PowerPoint, you simply need to save your presentation and upload this file to Sophia. If you are using another slide presentation technology, download the slide deck as a Microsoft PowerPoint (.pptx) and upload that version to Sophia.
