Introduction: Exploring Outdoor Leisure-Recreation for women and girls. Identify inclusive outdoor activities that empower females while fostering physical health, mental well-being, and community connection. Results should produce a deeper understanding and opportunities (for women and girls) to participate in outdoor leisure-recreation activities.

Learning Objectives

-Identify outdoor leisure activities suitable for women and girls of varying ages and skill levels.

-Analyze barriers and opportunities for female participation in outdoor recreation.

-Ability to design an inclusive, engaging outdoor activity tailored to women and girls.

-Reflect on the social, physical, and psychological benefits of outdoor leisure for female participants.

Essay that includes Ted talks, websites, videos, photos etc., and works cited list.

DETAILS, REQUIREMENTS: To complete the assignment, please choose from ONE of the following:

OPTION ONE (1)

Select up to 1-3 outdoor leisure activities (e.g., cycling, hiking, kayaking, rock climbing, camping, grounding, or nature photography, etc.) from credible sources like REI, Girl Scouts, or any other academic outdoor recreation, leisure or wellness or other website source(s).

Description: What the activity involves and where it can be done (e.g., local parks, lakes, trails).

Benefits: Physical, mental, and social benefits for women and girls (e.g., stress relief, confidence-building).

Barriers: Challenges women and girls might face (e.g., safety concerns, lack of gear, societal stereotypes, and physical, financial, socio-economic or environmental barriers).

Inclusivity: How the activity can be adapted for diverse ages, fitness levels, or cultural backgrounds (e.g., beginner-friendly programs, women-only groups).

Design an Outdoor Activity

Objective: Create a detailed plan for a women-and-girls-focused outdoor leisure event that encourages participation and empowerment.

Instructions:

1. Event Concept: Choose one outdoor activity and specify a) the target audience and b) that it is user friendly.

2. Event Details: Location, Duration, Equipment, Safety Measures, permits, legal requirements and anything else as researched and discovered. You may include links, examples.

POINTS TO PONDER

  1. How have these experiences been helpful/challenging for women and girls and leisure-recreation.
  2. Are there any social justice disparities linked to inclusiveness and access to women participating in any type of outdoor activity.
  3. What socioeconomic or financial conditions or considerations that relate to women and girls in the outdoors.
