The Dark Truth of Discovery

According to what you heard in class and the arguments presented in the articles, do you believe that Christopher Columbus an imperialist? You must support your answer using ONLY the articles. The essay should include:

1) a creative, exciting title

2) an engaging opening sentence

3) a strong introduction that summarizes the arguments of both historians (Sale and Royal), chooses a side on the issue, and states several reasons in supportTHESIS STATEMENT

4) several body paragraphs, each of which explain one of these reasons, and

5) a clear conclusion that agrees with your introduction and reiterates your thesis statement.

Guidelines for Essay:

1) READ AND FOLLOW THE FORMATTING RULES: The essay must be no less than THREE and no more than FOUR pages long; 12 point font Cambria; double-spaced with one-inch marginsno other lengths or formats will be accepted. CHANGE DEFAULTS IF NECESSARY.

2) You can quote important statements relevant to supporting your thesis. Dont quote over fifteen consecutive words. NO BLOCK QUOTES. Be surgical with quotes. Quotes should be packed with meaning.

3) Do NOT use Chicago or MLA. Please use parentheses and cite the proper page at the end of the sentence. If you are using direct quotes, please use quotation marks. A simple pair of parentheses before the period of the sentence with the page number will suffice. For example:

County Commissioner Darryl “T-Bone” Smoot, in his self-published novel, argued that the importance of using quotes according to the guidelines was “crucial to his success in college history classes (42).

4) The only source to be used for this assignment is the reading posted on Canvas. DO NOT USE OUTSIDE SOURCES!!!
