You will briefly provide a definition (one point), and then, also for each, state brief significance (for example, why did we talk about the term? ; what is the larger context of the term? ; how is the term connected with other terms?) Definition of TERMS

As part of this section, you will need to do the following: write the term, then label (using the word definition or simply D) and provide a brief definition (one point), and then, label (using the word significance or simply S) and state a brief significance (for example, why did we talk about the term?; what is the larger context of the term?; how is the term connected with other terms?) (one point). The total points you’ll earn for this section of the midterm is 20 points.

Part 2:

Each short answer essay will require you to write accurately and concisely. There is no minimum nor maximum amount that you will need to write, just be sure to answer the questions to the best of your availability. Each short answer question will be worth 20 points, totaling 40 points. Be sure to note which question you are answering. Each essay should be typed on a word-processing document that you must upload into Canvas (No, other file formats nor Google doc links accepted) ; double-spaced, 12-point font size, and in black ink.

There is need for a citation page, since you will not be asked to cite any author that we did not read in class. But when you mention within your essay an author that we read or referred to in class, make sure you spell their name correctly.

  1. Part 2: Short Answer Questions
  • You need to answer two short answer questions.
  • The content and format of these are not specified, but they will test your comprehension, analysis, and ability to connect course concepts.

Submit these by MONDAY February 9th AT 11:59pm. Late submissions will incur an automatic 5 point deduction for every day that it is late. Exams submitted starting at February 10th at 12:00AM will be considered late. No exceptions.

Please abide by our rules of academic honesty and integrity in truthful and responsible ways. Use of AI (i.e. ChatGPT) to compose your exam answers will result in an automatic 0 for the midterm. Simply put, if you are thinking of cheating, dont.

Make sure you answer the terms and essay questions directly and sequentially.

SHORT ANSWERS (20 points each)

Here are your two short answer questions. Be sure to address all parts of the question to the best of your ability. Also, make sure to pay attention to how much each part of the question is worth. Typically, parts of the question with more points will require more detail in the answer. In this class we have explored various forms of citizenship/membership to the United States. In addition, we have explored how these types of citizenship/membership are tied to social hierarchy. Please define Racial Triangulation (3), the Racial Binary (3), and its two main processes (4). Finally, please name and explain 2 court cases presented in class regarding whiteness, citizenship, and race (10).

One of the defining theories we have used to explore this relationship is Push Pull Theory. First, please explain the difference between, Immigration, Emigration, Migration, and Diaspora (4). Second, define Push Pull theory including its 4 (Four) components (5), three common push factors (3), three common pull factors (3), and how it relates to the 1965 immigration act (5).
