Consider a technological innovation (e.g. a piece of hardware, software, or media channel like MTV or Soundcloud) you have encountered in your lifetime that has transformed how you encounter, listen to, or make music. Describe one that you think is significant and what is has changed about music for you. Consider what has been beneficial, and what has been detrimental because of the technological transformation.
Example 1
I think a great piece of hardware or software that has evolved over the last 10-15 years is honestly my car radio, and Im pretty sure a lot of people can relate. My first car ever, my senior year in high school, the radio required an aux cord to be plugged in if I wanted to listen to my music and not the radio. It was the first thing you grabbed when you got in the car to set up before your drive. Now a days theres Bluetooth, your car will automatically connect to your phone while youre driving away and start playing the last song that you were previously listening to. Another good example is the recent update on Apple Music, before your songs would play out entirely in order or in shuffle, but now they have started merging the songs together as one is ending another is starting all at the same time. It has made listening to music in the car way more enjoyable than it already is. Something detrimental about it is if you werent done listening to the song, perhaps its your favorite part and it starts to mash up into a different song beforehand, is not nice.
Example 2
One innovation for me has been Youtube. Having to go from either purchasing a CD to listen to a song or renting one from the library to burn it to the computer, to now being able to find any artist music, recorded or live is incredible. I’ve discovered so many beloved artists this way, and I’m super grateful to be able to experience music in a indie way. It is unfortunate that I’m less likely to be able to bond with others over music like I was when you had to listen to the radio to see what was popular. Smaller communities are great, but having a large shared experience with others is special in its own way.

A technological innovation that has changed how I find music is TikTok. I find different songs that I like on my for you page. Seeing the different popular songs and trends opens a new varirety of listening to different kinds of music. It makes it easier to find music based off vibes rather than just searching from genre which can have a lot variability. It helps me find a lot of music that isn’t as mainstream and I wouldn’t have found otherwise. However this is not to say that TikTok is without problems. Most of the time you are only hearing 10-15 second clips of the song or the song is ofter sped up or slowed down. This can cheapen the affect of full songs and pretty much bypasses the idea of albums as a whole. Overall I love TikTok.

One technological innovation that changed how I experience music is Apple Music. Having access to millions of songs on my phone anytime has made it super easy to discover new artists and create playlists for different moods. Its way more convenient than buying individual albums, and I like how it recommends music based on what I already listen to. At the same time, because everything is so accessible, I dont always take the time to fully listen to albums the way I people used to.
