Background
School counselors can efficiently communicate educational resources for underrepresented and marginalized student populations through electronic newsletters, handouts, and brochures. Moreover, school counselors can bring awareness to parents and students regarding first-generation college programs such as Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) United Minds of Joint Action (UMOJA), Black Student Union and Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement (MESA). Additionally, counselors can introduce families to minority scholarships and parent education workshops. The ASCA standards promote counselor communication, family engagement, and community partnerships. Lastly, establishing positive relationships with households can lead to academic achievement, higher attendance rates, and equitable educational outcomes.
