As a special education teacher, being knowledgeable about suicide prevention and resources that are available to assist students and families in addressing issues such as self-esteem, peer pressure, bullying, etc. is an important part of successful professional practice. Knowledge of support and prevention strategies and the ability to communicate and share this information is crucial.

Imagine the school in which you are teaching has seen a decline in the social and emotional learning students are exhibiting. Create a 250-500 word digital newsletter for an upcoming family night to communicate strategies for supporting students’ personal and social growth and development. The newsletter will be printed and distributed to all attendees and emailed to families who are not present.

Your newsletter should include the following:

  • Provide 2-3 social and emotional learning strategies (SEL) that are universal for all students and can also be reinforced at home. Some suggestions may include strategies to address cyberbullying, digital citizenship, self-esteem, and peer pressure.

  • Recommend at least one resource for families for each of the categories above including SEL strategies, community building, and suicide prevention.
