Resource Management Leadership Interview Project

Purpose

Effective sport administrators must make complex decisions related to budgets, staffing, facilities, and organizational priorities. Learning directly from experienced professionals provides valuable insight into how leadership principles are applied in real-world sport organizations.

This assignment requires you to conduct a professional interview with a sport administrator and analyze how leadership influences resource management decisions.

What You Will Submit

You will complete two components:

Interview Summary Report (2 pages)
Leadership Reflection Video (2 minutes)

Part 1 Professional Interview

You will conduct an interview with a sport administrative leader who has experience managing organizational resources.

Who You May Interview

Appropriate professionals include:

Athletic Director or Associate Athletic Director
Sport Operations or Finance Administrator
Facility or Event Manager
Professional Team Administrator
Sport Organization Executive

The interview may be conducted:

In person
By phone
By Zoom or similar platform

Required Interview Questions

You must ask at least four of the following questions (you may ask additional relevant questions):

What is the most challenging resource allocation decision you have faced in your career?
How do leadership values influence how you manage limited resources?
What trade-offs do sport administrators most often underestimate?
How do you communicate unpopular resource decisions to staff or coaches?
How do you balance competitive success with financial responsibility?
What advice would you give graduate students preparing for leadership roles in sport administration?

Part 2 Interview Summary Report (Written)

Submit a 2-page professional summary that includes:

Interviewees name, title, and organization
Description of key resource management challenges discussed
Leadership strategies used by the interviewee
Two important insights from the interview
One connection to your own leadership development

Part 3 Leadership Reflection Video (2 Minutes)

Record a 2-minute professional reflection video summarizing what you learned about leadership and resource management.

What to Address in Your Video

In approximately two minutes, discuss:

One major lesson from the interview
One leadership strategy you want to apply in your career
One challenge you anticipate facing as a future sport administrator

Speak as if you are addressing a professional mentor or supervisor.
