DIRECTIONS
Using what you have learned thus far in the course, your task is to critically analyze how poverty is linked to a variety of other social problems by playing “Spent” (linked below) at least twice before answering the questions that follow. Be sure that your responses are detailed, thorough, and clearly demonstrate specific things you have learned and your ability to use your sociological imagination.
Be sure you complete your work in Google Docs, number your responses so they correspond to the prompts/questions below, and then save them in a PDF format for submission. And avoid at all costs doing anything that might compromise the academic integrity of your work.
PROMPTS/QUESTIONS
Link to the “Spent” Simulation:
1. On your first run through of the game, did you make it through the month? How much money did you have left and/or how much were you overdrawn?
2. On your second run through of the game, what did you do differently? Why? Did you make it through the month this time? How much money did you have left and/or how much were you overdrawn?
3. What did you learn by participating in this simulation? What surprised you? What concerns you?
4. How is this simulation relevant to the material in this unit? Bring in at least two specific concepts covered in the textbook and/or slides.
5. Poverty is, in and of itself, a social problem. What other social problems did the game clearly demonstrate are linked to poverty? And how so? Give at least two specific examples.
6. What should we do to address the social problem of poverty? What should we do to address the related social problems you discussed in your answer to the prior question? Make sure your suggestions are detailed and thorough and be sure you are thinking like a sociologist as you propose solutions.
YOUR NUMBERED RESPONSES TO THESE QUESTIONS SHOULD BE ATTACHED AS A PDF FILE. FAILURE TO FOLLOW THESE GUIDELINES MAY RESULT IN A ZERO.
GRADING NOTE: Feedback for this assignment will be available via TurnItIn and/or the Canvas grade book, so be sure to check both places.
