“I Got a Woman” and Gospel

Listen to Ray Charles’ live performance “I Got a Woman” and compare it to the performance of the Gospel hymn “There’s a Man Going ‘Round” as performed by Dr. CJ Johnson. What similarities do you hear between the two songs (listen carefully to the melodies) and what musical elements are different? How are the performances similar?

(Ray Charles Version)

(Dr. CJ Johnson Version (start at 1:02)

Example 1

Both songs are personally fairly different, but also do have some small similarities. For example the pitch of the melodies of both songs are similar in the way of the rising and falling of the sound, the groove of the songs are similar. The timbre is also similar to one another in the way that the songs sound triumph, victorious, welcoming. The performances are similar to one another because of the choirs participation, the clapping and moving in the background, adding uniqueness to the songs.

Example 2

Both songs are both similar in the way that they do a call and response. For example, in Ray Charles’ “I Got a Woman,” theres a call and response with Ray Charles’ singing, and the response is the instrumental. Theres a similar response in “There’s a Man Going ‘Round,” with Dr. CJ Johnson singing and the response being the church singing. The main difference between the two songs is that “There’s a Man Going ‘Round,” as performed by Dr. CJ Johnson has no instrumental, and instead has the church choir clapping and singing. This is contrasted with Ray Charles’ live performance of “I Got a Woman,” as it has instrumental in the background. The performances are similar as they are both very amazing singers that use a strong voice in their performance.

Example 3

Both songs sound similar because the melodies rise and fall in a gospel style, and the singing is very emotional and expressive. Ray Charles adds a strong beat and instruments, which makes his version faster and more secular, while Dr. C.J. Johnsons version is slower and more focused on worship with clapping and group vocals. Both performances feel similar because the lead singer is the main focus, and the gospel energy is still very clear.

Example 4

When I listened to Ray Charles I Got a Woman and Dr. C.J. Johnson Theres a Man Going Round Taking Names they both sound very energetic and have powerful vocal performances. Ray Charless song features lyrics about a woman who treats him well. Dr. C.J. Johnsons song features lyrics about Jesus and how he is going around taking names, a metaphor for death. Dr. C.J. Johnsons song uses call and response in place of instruments. Both song melodies start slowly, leap upward, and then descend again.
