Pick any 5 concepts or theories from textbook (50 points)
Example of concepts: Anomie, Generalized other, Cultural relativism, environmental racism
For each concept reflect on the following aspects:
Prompt 1 -What is this concept about what is it trying to explain? (3 points)
Prompt 2 -Give an example of its application. (How will you use it to understand society better, Why you personally feel it is relevant) (7 points)

Verstehen
This concept is related to Marx Webers philosophy of anti-positivism. Weber was interested in understanding interpretive meaning of social action. He was critical of standard scientific methods. Weber and Dilthey introduced the concept of Verstehen (understanding in deep way) to focus on the actors point of view.
This concept can be applied in qualitative research. While quantitative data provides a good overview of a topic, I personally feel that a detailed look at any issue gives valid understanding of the topic. For example, I am interested in understanding why there is a decline in average family size (number of children born is declining) Census data will provide an overall picture of declining family size. But to gain an in-depth understanding of what goes on into decisions about starting a family, I need to understand actors point of view. I have to understand culture and interpretive meanings couples attach to having a complete family. The concept of Verstehen will guide me towards a deep understanding of the topic.
