Gender Paper #1
This paper encourages you to reflect on material from class in the context of your own life and current events detailing news about gender related issues. I would like to select 4 concepts from at least 2 different chapters to examine a bit deeper. You will need to clearly define the concept, talk about its influences in your life, how it is encouraged/discouraged, and think analytically about how this concept has changed over time and the ways you expect it may change and be challenged in the future. Given that concepts related to gender are not static but ever changing, this should be a key feature in what you write. This assignment is worth 100 points because rather than just defining something, you should show that you are thinking deeply about these concepts and demonstrate understanding and application.
Feel free to add images and evidence as you see fit, but keep in mind anything you add in terms of image does not count towards the page count (ie- if you put a half page image it does not count towards your 4 pages). While this is a self-reflection this is not a forum for unsubstantiated opinions. This is the paper of thoughtful, critical scholars who provide evidence. Advocacy of ideas in the course should be elaborated by observations in your own life. Criticism should show evidence and citations if possible. Phrases like “I agree” or “I disagree” without providing evidence for your claims will be penalized!
Advice on getting started: First, select you concepts and find a definition of it from within the book. Second think about who were the biggest influencers of this concept in your life and has that changed over time? Think of the ways you have been encouraged or discouraged regarding this concept (ie- parents calling something is a phase is a common discouragement). Think deeply about this because it is often subtle (also if you use phase then provide evidence and come up with others in the other concepts that do not highlight that, meaning you cannot use it throughout and expect full points). Third, think about how this has changed for you and imagine how it may in the future. Do you think your understanding will change as a middle-aged person? When youre retired? As a grandparent (If you see yourself doing that?). If you pull in outside sources, please use citations. Stick with your chosen citation style- MLA, APA, ASA, etc. I dont mind which, just be consistent.
This paper should be at least 4 pages long, with 1-inch margins, and times new roman font. If one of these items is violated an automatic 5 points will be deducted. See below on the other items in the rubric:
- Defined each concept (4)- 20 points
- Applied each concept to live (4)- 20 points
- Discussed how it was fostered through encourage/discourage (4)- 20 points
- Changes over time (4)- 20 points
- Cite definitions and outside sources, clarity, flow of paper, and free from errors – 20 points
Total 100 points
