You will need to refer to the course textbook. Wade, L. (2025). Terrible Magnificent Sociology. W.W. Norton & Co. Guideline/Rubric for SA#1 Use to structure your paper NAME__________________________ Section of the paper (paragraphs) Points Possible 1. Paragraph summarizing the main idea and research question(s). Read the article/chapter that you selected. Describe the topic/phenomenon that the author(s) sought to understand or explain. Summarize the overarching research question(s). 10 2. Paragraph on theory/framework/perspective used in the article/chapter. Describe the theory or theories the author(s) use to explore or explain the phenomenon in the article. The article/chapter might use terms such as framework or guide or a phrase other than theory to refer to the source of hypotheses or ideas about what is happening in the research. Based upon what you learned in Wade (2025, particularly Appendix A), does the article/chapter that you read fit the structural functionalism, conflict, or symbolic interactionist perspective the best? You will need to explain the perspective you select and then explain why you think the research seems to fit the perspective. I will look more for the case you make and an accurate understanding of the perspective than for one right answer. Support your choice with evidence. 20 3. Paragraph on research methods. What research method(s) did the author(s) use? Based upon what you learned in Wade (2025, particularly Appendix B), are the methods quantitative, qualitative, or both? Justify your choice using specific details from the article and definitions/explanations from Wade (2025), and cite the textbook and/or article if you use information from them. 20 4. Paragraph on knowledge appropriate to the social sciences. Sociology is the study of society, and specific research studies/articles tend to focus on parts of society. Describe the social system(s) or human condition(s) that are the focus of the article and justify your claim with evidence from the article/chapter. Examples include sexuality, gender, race/ethnicity, age, social class, political orientation, field of study, military, geography (rural/urban), health. 10 5. Paragraph identifying a social fact in the article/chapter. Recall that Durkheim defined social facts as Products of human interaction with persuasive or coercive power that exist externally to any individual as summarized in Wade (2025:5), and that Wade added that social facts are anything produced collectively by people that exerts a force upon us. (2025:5). What in the article seems to fit the definition of a social fact? In other words, what is sociological about the article? 10 6. Paragraph on a highly relevant research question. Research often raises questions as well as answering them. After reading the article/chapter, what new sociological research question do you have that is related to this topic? You need to pick a question that the author(s) do not include in their article/chapter and you need to explain how your question is sociological. To make the case that your question is sociological it will be helpful to refer to Wades (2025) definition of sociology and/or the sociological imagination. 10 7. Reflection paragraph: What did you find most interesting in the research article? What do you wish the author(s) had included but did not see in the article? Can you imagine any societal or human issues that this article could help improve? In this paragraph, answer all three questions based upon your own lived experience and standpoint. You do not have to refer to the book or article. 10 8. References. At the end of your paper, create a section labeled References. Under this section, copy and paste the reference for the article/chapter that you selected from above and the book reference. The article/chapter and book are formatted according to APA style, a common style for social science research. 5 9. Word count. At the end of your paper, include the word count for your paper. For example: Word count is 905. [Has to be between 800-1,000 words] 2 10. Formatting etc. (e.g. 1 inch margins, 12 point font, essay format, correct grammar and spelling). 3 Assignment Details/notes: 100 possible points Use 12 12-point font. Hand in a MS Word document. Hand in on time there are penalties for late papers in the absence of an SSD accommodation. Hand in on time – Document technical problems with screenshots. Tips for reading research Scholarly articles can be hard to decode. Read the abstract, introduction, and conclusion first. Look up definitions of words that you do not understand. Identify the research question and think about it as you read the literature review and the results section. The discussion section provides a more informal interpretation of the results section. Therefore, if the results section discusses findings in terms of a statistical method you do not understand (e.g. regression) you should still be able to understand the results by reading the discussion section.
