Write an analysis of a topic presented in class, or a related topic. The paper should demonstrate outside research and sources. Discussion should include the relevance of the topic in respect to social welfare policy.
To help structure your paper, the following questions must be answered and used as subheadings:
- Identify the problem and the way it is defined.
- Identify the causes to which the problem is attributed.
- What are the values and beliefs that make the events of concern defined as a social problem?
- What ideologies, theories or paradigms of the social welfare system are relevant? Why?
- Who has power in regard to this issue?
- What social welfare policies and programs are relevant to the problem? Is there a role for Human Services? If so, what is the role of Human Services?
- Is the problem adequately addressed by present social welfare policies and programs? Is there more or less which should be done?
- What are your suggested changes or approaches to the problem.
Each of the questions should be a subheading in your paper. Points will be deducted for not including them as subheadings.
For example:
Full Title of Your Paper
Give an introduction of your social issue in the opening paragraph.
Identify the Problem and the Way It Is Defined
Start answering this question. Once completed, move on to the next question. Remember that each section must include support through in-text citations and references.
Identify the Causes to Which the Problem Is Attributed
Answer this question and then move on to the next. So forth and so on. Do this for all 8 subheadings. Your answers should be in paragraph form and should include support from your sources.
Most of your paper will discuss the social issue, but you should discuss relevant social policies in questions 6 & 7. Use the chart on pages 16 & 21 of your text to help you discuss the values and beliefs. For example, is your social issue influenced by individual or social responsibility? These are beliefs. Is this a personal or a collective value? Use chapter 3 to choose one ideology, theory or paradigm that applies to your social issue. For example, does the ideology of blaming the victim help explain the problem or current solutions to your social issue? Email me with questions.
