Identify a vulnerable or oppressed population that is of particular interest to you. An example would be Native Americans. If you are a member of a particular group(s), please select a group that you would not consider a part of your own identity.

Select an era identified in Chapters 3 12. An example would be Social Welfare Policy in the 19th Century: 1789-1902 in Chapter 4. When selecting your time period, you may want to consider when significant events occurred for your population.

Write a 6-7 page (body of paper) paper that includes:

  1. Identify the vulnerable population and the time period selected. (2 pts)
  2. Describe the typical socioeconomic situation for your population in that time period. Include at least 2 key social concerns/issues of the group. (4 pts)
  3. Describe the social policy(s), past or current, that addresses the issues. (10 pts)
  4. Using social justice, anti-racist, and anti-oppressive lenses assess how these policies affect the delivery of and access to social services to your selected population group.
  5. Explain the immediate outcomes/effectiveness of the policy(s) including advocacy efforts that are necessary to advance human rights and social, racial, economic, and environmental justice for your selected population group.
  6. Propose a plan that demonstrates how you can advocate for and engage practices that advance human rights to promote social, racial, economic and environmental justice at the individual, family, group, organizational, and community system levels. For example, attending LEAD Day or writing a letter to your local, state, or federal representative to advocate on behalf of your selected population group. (10 points)
