Short paper

A draft of the short paper is due this week. Please make it as complete as possible. That means that it is as close to four full pages as possible, uses standard paper formatting (margins and font), in-text citations, and a Works Cited. Students should use MLA Style in-text citations and the Works Cited. (In-text citations together with the Works Cited are both required to give appropriate credit to sources and avoid plagiarism.) Please see the outlines for a Baca Paper and a Truth Paper. Our assignment is slightly different. Instead of focusing on four poems by Baca or three speeches by Truth, you are doing a close reading of a text–focusing on a theme in either 12 Angry Men or a theme in Are Prisons Obsolete? Make sure you send your draft as either a .doc or a .docx file. Do not send a pdf. Please carefully read “More on Paper Formatting for College Papers.” Improperly formatted papers will not be read. Short Paper: This is a close reading of the text with a thesis or argument on the theme in the text selected (Reginald Rose’s 12 Angry Men or Angela Davis’ Are Prisons Obsolete?). It is not a research paper. Your evidence to support your thesis should come from quotes and paraphrased and/or summarized material from the The final Short Paper should be a typed, double-spaced paper of a minimum of four pages in length. (Four full pages required or about 1,500 words.) (MLA Style with in-text citations and a Works Cited; the Works Cited must be in addition to 4 pages of student text; please number the pages.) Correct citation and bibliographic format required. Standard margins and 12 point font (Times New Roman preferred) are expected. The paper should present an introduction with a summary of the novel, a thesis, and statement of the main points/examples. A brief (of about 15-20 sentences) summary of the life of person whose Narrative you selected should be included. The paper should use quotes and paraphrases/ summaries of significant things from the text to support student statements. The final polished version of the paper is due next week. Plagiarism or cheating on this assignment can result in automatic course failure. Review the course learning outcomes for English 102 (below) and syllabus on plagiarism. The short paper must be an attached document. I will not be accepted as an assignment cut and pasted into a textbox. It must have page numbers and proper paper formatting.
