1. Attend a full session at a homeless shelter, family shelter, shelter for battered women

&/or children or a foodbank.

2. Contact the shelter coordinator for permission prior to attending. You can go to

observe and or volunteer 4-6 hours of time. Please informt them that you are a nursing

student. Ask what the required attire is.

3. In a minimal two-page double spaced paper (APA style required) discuss the following:

a. Discuss your thoughts, feelings & beliefs that you have about the shelter

before attending. Were any preconceptions different after attending? What

was the experience like from a personal and professional view?What did you

do while you were there? Explain and be honest!

b. List when, where & what type of shelter you attended. Who was in charge

of the shelter?

c. Discuss the environment was like, common health concerns experienced

by the population, how they receive care, infection control issues at the

shelter, are the residents there for short or long term, what community services

are available medical, mental health, financial, ADLs, etc. Be descriptive.

d. Discuss if this is a targeted Population by Healthy People 2020. If so,

discuss which initiatives it applies to and why.

4. If you could take one thing that youve learnt from this scenario and apply it in clinical

what would it be? What did you learn from this experience?

I completed my food bank experience at C.S. 112 which is a community school in the Edenwald Area of The Bronx, The school has a food pantry which receives fresh produce, canned goods, and food supply on a weekly basis and allows for parents of students and the community to come get food supplies every Friday. Our jobs during the day included, setting up the tables, unpacking the pantry truck and stocking the shelfs and freezers. We assisted in packaging the food and preparing them for the give away. At the end of the pantry we assisted in cleaning up the area and putting away all the supplies before leaving the school.
