• Part 1: The Mirror Effect: Please respond to the following questions in your discussion prompt ***(Each Question Response is worth 3 points for a total of 15 points)
  • “Sociologist Charles Cooley suggested we form our identity based on how we think others perceive us. Think about a time your perception of yourself was completely different from how a friend or colleague described you.
  • Discuss the above briefly. How did you become self aware of this reality? Did you move to reconcile or correct your friend/colleagues incorrect perception of you? If so, how did you correct their false impression of you. Or if you did not choose to correct the false perception that your friend/colleague had of you, explain why not. What was you rationale for not doing so?
  • Do you think it is difficult to change people’s initial perceptions of others? Why or why not?
  • What advice would you give to someone who feels incorrectly “labeled or judged” by others initial perceptions?
  • How do you think other people’s perceptions effect our self esteem?
  • How do you use indirect and direct perception checking in your lives? Provide a specific example and discuss how perception checking benefits your greater understanding of people, interactions and the world around you.
