This Signature Assignment illustrates the following Program Learning Outcome (PLO) #3: Practice the profession of nursing based on a set of core values which incorporate a humanitarian, altruistic and social justice perspective.

Purpose

The purpose of this assignment is to guide you in examining professional nursing values and behaviors. Ethics, in the practice of nursing, plays a significant role in your decision-making process used in caring for patients, their supports, and communities. Many ethical dilemmas occur in the delivery of health care. Some ethical situations are not clearly identified or recognized as such, and may go unnoticed or ignored. This paper will give you a practice opportunity to examine a case study and analyze a situation that presents as an ethical dilemma and the moral agency you, the nurse might use to address it.

Topic List: You will be randomly assigned an article to use for your paper. You will check for your assigned article in the “Tools” menu under “groups”. The number of your group corresponds with the number of the article.

Utilizing all these resources and those you independently research using the Baruch Library, you will identify and comprehensively discuss the ethical principles of concern involved in the assigned article. Consider the ANA Code of Ethics as a definitive guide for practice. What was/were the dilemmas faced by nurses? How does the understanding of healthcare and the culture of practice impact the dilemma(s)? How does structural racism and implicit bias impact nursing care? Using Rest’s Model of Four Components, analyze the ethical dilemma(s) and the steps needed to identify and implement moral agency (or action) to address the issue. Finally, you will reflect on the impact of ethical dilemmas on your own and your profession’s moral distress and moral resiliency. Address each of the following points in detail using the bolded words as the headings for each section of your paper:

  • Introduction and brief summary of why the concept of ethics is important to study (no heading required)
  • Define the ethical issue(s) of concern from the article, discuss what creates the ethical issue(s) and support your thoughts with independent peer reviewed research from the literature. Provide multiple examples.
  • Define and discuss two (2) ethical principles that are relatable to the clinical example(s) in the article and how they are applicable in making a decision regarding the ethical dilemma. Autonomy, justice, beneficence, and non-maleficence are a few examples of ethical principles that may be considered in the decision. Describe three (3) details that support your selection for each ethical principle.
  • Define and discuss three (3) ANA Code of Ethics Provisions that support a nurses moral agency for action to speak up and address the ethical issue of concern and provide a rationale for each of your selections.
  • Define and discuss Rests Model of Four Components of moral behavior. The four components include moral sensitivity, moral judgement and reasoning, moral motivation, and moral character. Apply each component to one situation in the article that a nurse could have/should have used.
  • Define moral distress and comprehensively describe how the ethical issue(s) from the article impacts moral distress of the individual nurse and the profession of nursing with multiple details and examples.
  • Define moral resilience and discuss how moral resilience can be developed and utilized in ethical dilemmas.
  • In reflection, consider your own nursing practice, moral distress and sources for resilience.
  • Summarize the key points of the paper in the final paragraph

  • This APA formatted paper will include a title page, abstract page, body of the paper and reference page and should be no longer than 6 pages, excluding title, abstract and reference pages. All research is to be conducted using the Baruch Library exclusively. All references must include active links to the articles found in the library.
  • Make sure to format according to Chapters 2, 8, 9, and 10 in the APA Manual.
