Rhetorical Analysis of ‘Becoming Disabled’ by Rosemarie Garl…

Essay 1 Instructions Essay 1 is a Rhetorical Analysis of the text that you chose to be your Reading #1. As long as you address Logos, Ethos, Pathos, Audience, and Purpose, and you meet the Formatting and Requirements, the structure itself can be rather flexible. If you would like to address other rhetorical elements (e.g. exigence, kairos, doxa, etc.), you’ll need to tie them to Logos/Ethos/Pathos (e.g. exigence ties in to pathos in that establishing urgency can make the audience feel more anxious about solving the problem sooner than later). Formatting and Requirements Your essay should be at least 1000 words (not including Works Cited) Include your name, my name, class and date in the upper left corner of the 1st page Clearly put which essay you are addressing in the title of your paper Format your essay according to MLA guidelines and the template: to an external site. It should have an Intro section (with a thesis at the end of the Intro), Body paragraphs (no required number) that provide textual evidence to support the thesis, and a Conclusion section (roughly a paragraph). Include a Works Cited page listing all sources you used or consulted, and there should be a Word Count after the Conclusion (NOTE: This essay SHOULD follow this sample more closely than SWA2 did – i.e. it should have an Intro Paragraph with the bolded Thesis at the end, several Body Paragraphs, a Conclusion Paragraph, Word Count, and Works Cited). SAMPLE STRUCTURE (i.e. NOT REQUIRED) Introduction: Topic and Argument For the introduction, give us a (brief!) overview of the topic of the essay and its importance. Then move to general statements about the effectiveness of rhetoric in the essay. End the introduction with a bolded thesis statement that clearly states not only THAT the essay used rhetorical elements, but HOW it did and WHY it is (or isn’t) effective. Part (or Paragraph) 1: Analyze the use of Logos, Ethos, and Pathos in Reading #1. How does the essay appeal to reason, credibility, and emotion to support the argument? Identify specific examples of evidence, statistics, and anecdotes used to appeal to the reader’s logic, trust in the author, and emotional response. To explore these elements please examine the writing style and tone. Question to promote critical thinking: How does the author use language (diction) and tone to establish his position and connect with the audience? Please try to discuss the impact of stylistic choices on the overall persuasiveness of the essay. Part (or Paragraph) 2: Analyze Audience in Reading #1. It is also important to pay attention to the author’s awareness of their target audience(s). How do they tailor their message to resonate with the intended readership? Consider whether the author effectively anticipates and addresses the concerns or perspectives of their audience. Examine how they envision their essay influencing the reader’s perspective or behavior. Question to promote critical thinking: Do they seek to inspire action, provoke thought, or foster a particular emotional response? Discuss any strategies used by the author to make their purpose clear and compelling to the reader. How do they align their purpose with the urgency of the issue at hand? Part (or Paragraph) 3: Analyze Purpose in Reading #1. Investigate the author’s overarching purpose in writing this essay. Question to promote critical thinking: What is the author’s primary goal or intention? Analyze whether the author aims to inform, persuade, entertain, or provoke a specific response from the audience. How does this purpose shape the rhetorical choices made throughout the essay? Conclusion Wrapping up the essay, ensure to re-state the thesis statement, and to summarize the key rhetorical strategies employed by the author used in conveying their message. Please then evaluate the overall effectiveness of these strategies in persuading the reader regarding the purpose of the essay.
