Rhetorical Analysis of a Speech:
Compose an essay analyzing the speaker’s use of rhetoric; particularly addressing
, and target audience. Review all resources provided in modules for more detailed instructions and formatting rules. Speech choices are below with links to the full text. This essay should be 800-1000 wordsnot including title, heading, or Work Cited.
This essay should conform to the expectations of academic writing including:
- The use of formal standard American academic prose (which we discussed in class)
- Typed with 12 pt font, in Times New Roman, 1-inch margins, double-spaced, without the extra spaces between the paragraphs, and with the appropriate heading
- Having an interesting and appropriate title.
- a formal argumentative thesis statement (not implied)
- Example: This speech is effective in its persuasive argument because __________.
- Fully developed paragraphs including an introduction and a conclusion.
IN THE ESSAY YOU SHOULD:
- Have a clear, unified, and specific thesis where you offer your conclusionwhether or not this communication was effective.
- Use a clear organizational strategy (Points from greatest to least or least to greatest works well)
- Use the standard vocabulary we have established in this class (ethos, pathos, logos, etc.)
- State your opinion and validate (back it up) with evidence from the speech.
- Cite your evidence using the correct MLA style. There is only one source needed for this assignment and it is the speech itself. All examples of rhetoric should come from the text of the speech.

Also, make sure to cite your chosen quotes throughout according to MLA format.
Finally, be sure to include a properly formatted Works Cited page that properly cites your chosen speech.
Essay Guide
The analysis of your chosen speech should follow the structure below:
Introduction:
A brief summary of the speech. Thesis Statement: What rhetorical devices were used and if and how they were successfully used.
Body:
Writer Background and observations about the writer and his/her agenda.
Audience General observations about the intended readers, why they have been targeted, and what the writer expects of them.
Text How the writer has appealed to the readers, the tone he/she has adopted, and what methods he/she has used to manipulate their thinking, with specific examples and comments.
Be sure to identify at least 2 examples of ethos, pathos, and logos. (This should be the longest section of your paper.
Conclusion:
A summary of my findings, with specific judgments about the article and its effectiveness.
