Step I: Teen Gun Violence and Substance Abuse in the community

• Find a cause you are passionate about. I would recommend finding a problem within your community that it is possible to volunteer time to help solve.
• Research the problem as you would normally do for a research paper (What is the problem? Why do we have this problem? Is the problem becoming worse? What are some possible solutions to the problem? Etc.).
• You will complete a short (approximately 4 pages, double-spaced) research paper on the subject.

Step II: Volunteer work at NYPD Explorers Program ( for young teens who are going in the wrong direction, a change for the better and a second chance) I was an Explorer from 2016-2020 not because i was going down the wrong path but to help these kids. I am back to volunteer to continue to help these kids and new generations.

Volunteer 3 – 5 hours of your time with an organization that is attempting to solve this problem.

Step III:

Write a short reflection paper about your volunteer experience (2 pages double-spaced) and attach this reflection paper to your research paper. In the paper you will:

• Summarize your experience
• Compare your views before and after the experience
• Offer any other personal insights about the issue within your community or generally that might not fit into a traditional research paper.
