Research Paper Proposal

Step 1: Choose a topic that is of interest to you, is focused but not too narrow, and has some connection to your life. Avoid overused topics, and check with me if you’re unsure about that. Decide which type of paper best fits your topic:

  • Position Paper: If you are writing this type of paper, you will need to:
  • clearly state your position on a controversial topic.
  • include the opposition’s point of view. (Refute it or acknowledge its strengths.)
  • support your point of view with a well-reasoned argument and evidence from outside sources.
  • be reasonable.
  • Problem-Solution Paper: If you are writing this type of paper, you will need to:
  • clearly state and prove a problem exists using evidence from outside sources.
  • propose likely solutions supported with outside evidence.
  • explain how and why solutions will work.
  • handle any opposition.
  • be reasonable.

Step 2: Compose and submit a 2-3 page tentative research proposal essay in APA format that addresses these five points:

  • Explain how and why you decided on this topic. Imagine that you are trying to convince me as well as your classmates that you have sufficient interest in your topic to research it for the rest of the semester (because that’s exactly what you will have to do).
  • Describe the problem or issue you plan to research. Demonstrate that the problem you want to solve or the issue you want to take a stance on is significant. Include a tentative/working thesis statement. What must you discuss to support your argument? What more do you need to learn to support your thesis?
  • Include a list of at least five questions to help you with this. These questions will guide your research. In addition to the questions provided in the PowerPoint, consider the journalistic questions: Who, What, When, Where, Why, and How?
  • Identify your target audience. Choosing a target audience helps you to focus your argument by determining how much background information you need and helps you set the tone for your argument. Keep in mind that your audience should have the authority or ability to accept your solution or act on your position. In addition, consider how you would like your audience to perceive you.
  • Conclusion: Whatever you need to say to sum up your proposal.

Please note: Only documents in Word or a PDF will be legible in Blackboard. Please save your essay in either of those formats before you upload it. No GoogleDocs or posting in the submission box. If AI or any other outside source has been included in your work, acknowledge them appropriately (citations, in APA format). Be sure to complete the AI Acknowledgement Form as well.
