Research essay rough draft

Assignment: Choose a topic from the list of suggested topics (see the list on page 4 of this document), and write a research essay that identifies two perspectives on the topic. For example, the pros and cons of the death penalty. You should find two reasons for the pro perspective and two reasons for the con perspective. The goal is to examine two perspectives on the topic without biasthis is not an argument paper. Choose a topic that you can evaluate without personal opinion/bias. Instead, you should use sources to explain the perspectives. Note: specific directions for each paragraph are included later in this document. The topic you choose should have two clear perspectivesfor examples, pros and cons or advantages vs disadvantages. Use at least four academic sources. Format: MLA. Research: Use at least four sources. One source should be scholarlya book from the library or journal from an academic database like NCLive. It is always a good idea to exceed the minimum number of sources. Cite these sources in the essay and on the Works Cited page. Sources should come from books, web articles, scholarly journal articles (from NC Live). Do not use videos. Minimum Length: 900 wordsthis is the minimum word requirement to receive a C. Exceed the minimum word count to maximize your score. Do not plagiarizereview the Syllabus Plagiarism Policy. Source material should either be directly quoted or paraphrased. Limit direct quotes to 10% or less of the paperlimit them to about a sentence or two in length. When discussing source material, rely more on paraphrasing. Be sure to completely reword paraphrases and cite them. Cite all source material that you use in both text of the paper and on the Works Cited page. AVOID AI: Do not use AI in anyway to write this paper. Use of AI is monitored by Turnitin and will result in a grade of zero in accordance with the academic dishonesty policy. POV: Use 3rd person. Before writing the essay, you should complete and turn in the Research Paper Outline. After you finish the Outline, write the rough draft. To get an A: exceed the minimum word count, find at least two strong reasons for each perspective and develop these reasons in strong body paragraphs, support these paragraphs with info from at least 4 strong academic sources (the better the quality of the sources, the better the grade), correctly cite these sources in the essay and on the Works Cited page, utilize correct grammar. Be sure to complete all of the assignments that will precede the final draft. These include the bibliography, the Outline, and the rough draft. I will provide feedback on these assignments. Here is how to develop the essay: 1) Begin the essay with an introduction paragraph Start with a hook/attention getter. Then provide a few sentences of discussion on the topic. End the introduction with a thesis statement that combines the topic+ two perspectives. 2) In paragraph 2, discuss relevant history and current state of the issue. You can explain why the issue is controversial. Use a source or two in this paragraph and cite the source. 3) In paragraph 3, discuss the first perspective of the issue (for example, the pro side). You can focus on one reason why people who support this perspective do so. Use information from at least one source to write this paragraph. Cite that source in the paragraph. Be sure to discuss the perspective without personal biasjust explain why people agree with this perspective. 4) In paragraph 4, continue discussing the first perspective. Discuss another reason why people support this issue from their perspective without personal bias. Use information from at least one source to write this paragraph. Cite that source in the paragraph. Be sure to discuss the perspective without personal biasjust explain why people agree with this perspective. 5) In paragraph 5, you can begin discussing perspective 2 (for example, the con perspective). Try to focus on one reason that supports this perspective and explain it without bias. Use information from at least one source to write this paragraph. Cite that source in the paragraph. Be sure to discuss the perspective without personal biasjust explain why people agree with this perspective. 6) In paragraph 6, discuss another reason that supports perspective 2. Use information from at least one source to write this paragraph. Cite that source in the paragraph. Be sure to discuss the perspective without personal biasjust explain why people agree with this perspective. 7) In paragraph 7, evaluate which perspective has the stronger evidence. Support your decision with evidence. If neither perspective is clearly strong than the other, you can explain this. You can use and cite sources in this paragraph. 8) End the essay with a conclusion paragraph that restates the thesis (use differently words), recaps the major points of the essay, and ends with a final thoughtry to make a prediction or look to the future. Remember to include a Works Cited page on the last page that cites every source you cite in the paper. Remember to cite every source that you use in the paper and on the Works Cited page.
