Assignment #2 Instructions
The purpose of the three research critiques is to help you become familiar with analyzing
research reports, enabling you to quickly identify where key information is typically located
in such articles. Through this process, you will answer pertinent questions related to each
type of study. This foundational skill will prepare you for rapid critical appraisal (RCA) in NU
745 and guide you in selecting the appropriate RCA tools to evaluate the validity, reliability,
and applicability of articles to practice.
We will use established reporting guidelines to frame the questions you should consider for
each research design. These guidelines were developed to standardize and improve the
quality of published literature by ensuring that studies include the critical information
needed to assess their validity (Are the study results credible?) and reliability (What are the
study results?).
The EQUATOR Network (Enhancing the QUAlity and Transparency Of health Research)
website, available at https://www.equator-network.org/, provides access to a
comprehensive collection of reporting standards categorized by study or article type. I
intentionally use the term “article type” because systematic reviews and meta-analyses are
not considered studies.
The reporting guidelines for the three research critiques in this course are outlined in Table
1. To complete these critiques, download the CONSORT 2010 and PRISMA checklists from
the EQUATOR website in MS Word format. The COREQ checklist is available in the
Research Critique folder on Blackboard, along with PDFs of the three articles listed in
Table 2.
Table 1 identifies the study/article types and the corresponding reporting guidelines. The
questions in Table 1 are specifically aligned with each reporting guideline and must be
answered using the information provided in the study/article.
For example, in Week 3, students will access the first article: Reid, C., Fenech, M., Jones,
L., & Salehi, N. (2020). Nurse practitioner interventions for smokers with chronic hepatitis
C. Journal of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners, 32(5), 380389.
. Students will determine the type of study
or article, select the appropriate reporting guideline from the three listed in Table 1, and
answer the “Questions to Answer” listed in the final column of Table 1 for the
corresponding guideline.
