Instructions, Strong Suggestions, and Guidelines
Each chapter on theories consists of one or more specific therapy approaches that fall under the general philosophy, or theoretical orientation, being covered in the chapter. The textbook has several tables that outline and compare/contrast each theoretical orientation. These tables will be helpful as you prepare your reflection papers.
Content Requirements: (What to include)
- Summarize the Theoretical Orientation or Theory: Key Concepts, Therapeutic Process, contributions, strengths, limitations, application, multicultural strengths & shortcomings
- Discuss the Strengths & Limitations of the Theoretical Orientation or Theory from your perspective
- Personal AlignmentWhat parts do you feel align with your own personal & professional values? How & why?
- Personal ConflictWhat parts do you have a conflict with or disagree with? How & why?
- ConclusionOverall, is this a theoretical orientation or specific theory that you could ascribe to? Explain. If only partially, address the key concepts that you could see as being integrated into your own personal counseling philosophy and explain.
General Rules:
- Each reflection paper will vary in terms of the number of pages; thus, I have no page number requirements. You will be graded on the thoroughness of your paper as opposed to page length. Some chapters cover more content than others, thus contributing to the number of pages required just to provide a complete summarization alone.
- Your paper MUST thoroughly address each and every item in the Content Requirements. This means that you MUST go far above and beyond making a simple statement or regurgitating the chapter contents. It is called a reflection paper for a reason!
- You MUST cite your sources. You are reporting information from the chapter of a textbook at the very least, thus the textbook and its chapter MUST be both cited and included in a reference list. You are strongly encouraged to seek out additional resources on the specific Theoretical Orientation or Theory that you are covering. Each chapter provides a good resource list to get you going.
- Use APA style (7th Edition) to format this paper (go to Writing Resources in Resources Module)
- DO NOT INCLUDE AN ABSTRACT
- Use APA headings formatting
- Include proper citations
- Include a properly formatted reference list
- Running head must be formatted appropriately and accurately with your name and reflection paper number as the running head title.
- You must include page numbers properly formatted in the header (not heading, header)
- Do not submit your first draft. You, as a graduate student, should spend time intentionally reviewing and contemplating your paper through at least two or three drafts prior to submission. Check for spelling, grammar, the flow of information, organization, structure, formatting, etc. Check again. It will show and it will have an effect on your grade.
- Use the grading rubric as you plan your paper and when you complete your final draft. Consider if your paper meets the requirements for the grade that you would like to receive. If not, make additional changes, edits, restructuring, etc. Have someone else read it and let you know if they could understand it. This is often more helpful than we expect.
- You can type or paste your work into the assignment textbox or submit your paper as a doc or docx file attachment. No other file formats will be accepted. You will not be informed that you have submitted an unacceptable format. You will receive a zero grade.
- Submit your reflection paper BEFORE the posted deadline. Remember that I do not accept late papers.
- If you have experienced an emergency or a crisis at the last minute, you need to contact me via email from your ECU email and let me know what has happened. Once your emergency or crisis is stabilized, I will arrange for an extended deadline for you. Youll only get one or two passes for emergency/crisis extensions. You WILL have to provide doctor notes or other documentation
- Even in the event of an emergency/crisis at the last minute, you should have the final draft of your paper ready to submit. Students who simply put off the assignment until the last minute dont qualify for emergency/crisis situations.
- A true emergency/crisis situation is one in which something beyond your control has prevented you from being able to access and submit your paper by the posted deadline.
- If you know of an issue that may interfere with your ability to submit your paper by the deadline you should plan to submit the paper early (start working on the paper earlier than usual). If this is absolutely not possible, communicate with me so that we can make alternative plans. (i.e. I have had students who had planned surgeries that interfered with their timelines and we worked out an alternative that allowed recovery time).
Suggestions:
- Plan your schedule to work on your assignments (including these papers) in advance.
