For this assignment, you are writing the section of your proposal that identifies the population and setting. For example, the population can be patients on a medical-surgical unit who have been readmitted with heart failure within 30 days. Or, the population may be nurses who work in the ICU experiencing burnout due to the pandemic.
For the setting, the name of the institution need not be given; rather, you can describe the setting by type of institution/unit and location.
Sample Section Guidelines
This section covers your planned recruitment and ethical considerations for your future participants. It should take up about two to three pages, or approximately 350 to 500 words. Participant/Setting Section Guidelines – This section of the paper covers the description of the population that will experience the planned change based on your review of literature. The setting should also be described. You should need no more than two paragraphs for each. Continue to use sub-headings throughout this section of the paper.
In this section, write about the following:
- Population: Cover the following points in no more than one or two paragraphs:
- Who are the recipients of the EBP change? Provide some general information about the population based on the typical patient or if your population is focused on nurses, describe nurses in terms of age, experience, and any other factors that may affect the project implementation.
- What the inclusion criteria will be, if any (for more expansion, you may add the exclusion criteria to show what was consciously eliminated). An example would be that the population is heart failure patients recently readmitted within 30 days except for patients with severe disease and/or cognitive deficits.
- Explain your rationale for your choice.
- Although this subsection should cover all these items, it may be written in a narrative style.
- Setting: Keeping in mind this is a proposed setting, and it should not be recognizable for confidentiality and privacy reasons. It is a broad view of the setting. For example:
- The proposed setting for this project is a large teaching hospital in the northeast. The actual place where the project would be carried out is in the three medicalsurgical units in this hospital. Each unit has a bed capacity of 2530 beds with occupancy rates of 92% to 95%. The project will take place in a private conference room.
