Background and Overview

“Design” is a part of everything in life, from art to engineering, from culinary creations to architecture, from fashion to film, etc. Chapter 5 in Writing That Works provides a deep dive for us into the many ways that design plays a part in effective business documents. The many types of text and visual design concepts presented in this chapter will apply in a myriad of ways across the varied disciplines and career paths that students in this class are pursuing.

Target Course Objectives

  • Communicate persuasive, complex content that demonstrates the writers understanding of the subject.
  • Demonstrate time-management skills by submitting assignments by the specified due dates.

Instructions

  • Focus on one design concept or principle discussed in Chapter 5 of Writing That Works that was new to you.
  • First, write a paragraph identifying the concept or principle that was new to you and briefly summarize the related textbook content.
  • Next, write a paragraph explaining how you will apply what you have learned in your academic or workplace writing.
  • Enclose any direct quotes from Writing That Works in quotation marks and include the page number in parentheses before the period. [“Quote” (p. #).].
