In essay 1, students must clearly and logically identify and word 2 separate root causes they believe are why their particular campus issue exists or persists.

So, for example, the instructor’s example campus issue is “colleges/universities overreliance on adjunct/part-time faculty.”

His 2 root causes that identify why this issue exists or persists are 1) Application of corporate practices/systems in higher education by college leadership and 2) Bottom-line approach to higher education

mirroring those of large corporations.

Consequently, the solutions part of the problem/solution essay will be identifying 1 “solution” for each of these 2 root causes.

However, we must ID clear root causes to then ID solutions.

This particular exercise will help students identify and detail root causes related to their issue.

It is suggested that students consider the development of the thesis outline part I in connection w/this exercise.

Be sure you are clear on what a “root cause” is in relation to the problem/solution essay/outline.
