2-3 pages
In this class, you are expected to
two reaction papers regarding course material, and this is the first of those, in response to the documentary Poverty, Politics, and Profit.
The papers should be 2 to 3 pages in length (not counting a title page, abstract or bibliography).
Your papers are worth a total of 50 points each.
For this writing assignment, it is important that students adhere to APA guidelines.
This assignment will be graded not only on content, but also on grammar, structure, and for
plagiarism. Your essays need to be typed, double
–
spaced, and use a 12 pt. Times New Roman
font. Students should check the
OWL website for a description of APA standards:
http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/560/05/.
Also, writing is an important skill that needs
to be demonstrated in this course. It is recommended that you not wait until the last minute
before beginning this assignment, and
it is extremely important that you proofread!
The goal here is incorporate what you have learned about Social Process Theories, and apply that knowledge to the content of the documentary.
You have broad leeway in how you approach this, but you should focus on anomie/strain, subcultural deviance, or social disorganization. Select one of these ideas and apply it to the policies and phenomena depicted in the documentary. Explain why you selected the social process theory that you did, and why it applied to the content in the film. What does this tell us about crime and crime policy in the US?
Does it suggest any specific failings or successes? How did you see social process theory in action? The answers to at least some of these questions should be found in your reaction.
1: Summarize the elements of the film you wish to discuss and why you selected those. You dont need to recap the entire documentary, but instead incorporate the aspects of the
movie that most interested you, then explain why those elements were
chosen.
2: Tell me which of Strain/Anomie, Subcultural Deviance, or Social Disorganization best
fits the elements you identified, then react to the film through that lens. Tell me what the
theory discusses and how it applies to what you saw. Give me an idea of how you react to
this, and what lessons you learned from it.
