Assignment A2: Race, Sexuality, and Gender Amongst the Progressives This assignment supports the following lesson objective: Analyze the interaction between gender, sexuality, and race in America during the Progressive era. Assignment Overview Watch Unforgivable Blackness: The Rise and Fall of Jack Johnson and use an appropriate secondary source to write a short paper about the connections between gender, race, and sexuality in American history. Deliverables Written response (400-500 words) to exercise questions Assignment Details Perform the following tasks: link to watch — https://hs1.farmingdale.edu:2208/watch/unforgivable-blackness-the-rise-and-fall-of-jack-johnson Step 1: Watch Unforgivable Blackness: The Rise and Fall of Jack Johnson (a link is available in this module). I would encourage you to watch the entire film. At a minimum, watch the Intro (minutes 1-12), part 2 (“The Emperor of Masculinity, minutes 12-23), “Independence Day” (starting at 1 hour 27 minutes) and “A Word to the Black Man” (starting at 1 hour 39 minutes). Step 2: Use one secondary source to research a related topic on the linkages between gender, race, and sexuality during this period in American history. This research can focus explicitly on the life of Jack Johnson or explore a related topic from the film that you find interesting. The secondary source should come from the library’s databases. For more information on identifying articles from the library, refer to Research Guidelines in the Course Information. Questions to address might include (but are not limited to) the following (you do not need to answer all of these questions take one as a starting point for your essay): From watching the film, what do you find most striking about the connections between gender, sexuality and race in this period of American history? Why? What has your research added to your understanding of the linkages between gender, sexuality, and race in American history? Step 3: Save and submit your essay.
