Public Policy Paragraphs

At three different times over the semester. Students will need to review a NEWS article related to public policy

issue. Students have to examine the article and public policy issue and provide an interpretation of that issue by

applying concepts in the chapter.

Each submission should:

o Be an article from a legitimate news source. This should not be a UN or NGO report. News sources

should be from media sources like newspapers. The source can be from the US or another country. Articles

like reports from NGOs or press releases are not considered news and are not appropriate for this

assignment. If you are not sure about the quality of the source, please email your instructor. You just need

to note all articles used.

o This should an article about the issue and related public policy. IT MUST BE ABOUT A PUBLIC POLICY-

RELATED TO GOVERNMENT ACTION.

o Students must START with the source of the article including news source name, website of the article or

database used, title and date of the article.

All of this should be at the top of the submission. I need to know where you found the article.

You will receive a zero if it is not included.

o The submission

must include at least 12 sentences (but no more than about 18) including:

A topic sentence identifying the issue

Sentences summarizing the article focusing on the issue. Make sure to provide detail

and explain the policy and issue.

Sentences applying terms in the book to the article. Make sure to give enough detail to

make sure the grader knows you understand the connection.

must be a different issue and article for each assignment.

Paragraph 1, must include how it is a public policy, the level of government it is related to, and how the

issue would fit into the stages or alternate models of public policy.

o Paragraph 2, must include information about official or unofficial actors, identification of what type of

policy it is.

o Paragraph 3, must be related to economic, education, criminal justice, civil rights, social welfare,

environmental, or energy policy.
